Medicare Improvements For Patients And Providers Act
The June 26th vote on the Medicare bill was an unfortunate victory of partisanship over coming together to find solutions to our nation’s problems. Instead of allowing a vote on a bipartisan agreement on a Medicare bill that would have taken care of physicians and patients, the Senate Democratic Leadership only allowed a vote on a one-sided bill that would have cut another Medicare program. Instead of solving problems, the Democratic Leadership unfortunately continues to play politics at the expense of our doctors and seniors.

I have been very clear in my opposition to cutting Medicare Advantage reimbursements to pay for other changes to the Medicare program. There are 217,535 North Carolinians who are currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, and 55% of those individuals are enrolled in Advantage private fee-for-service plans. I am very disappointed that the Congress failed to act before the July 1 deadline, but I am confident we can quickly come together and pass meaningful, retroactive legislation that helps our doctors and the patients who depend on them.

Rising Gas Prices
The people of North Carolina are feeling the squeeze from high prices. Families, businesses, and communities are all trying to figure out how to deal with the skyrocketing cost of energy. It is time for Congress to pass some common sense reforms that will help ease the pain at the pump that is affecting everyone.

It is essential that we increase America’s domestic production of energy to bring stability to the market and reduce energy prices. That is why I support the proposal to lift the ban on the states’ ability to explore for energy resources on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). I believe the states should have the right to decide whether they want to be part of this exploration. There is potential for rich reserves of natural gas many miles off the coast of North Carolina. It is not right for the federal government to tell North Carolinians that they cannot benefit from the lower energy prices and economic returns that could result from exploring domestic sources of energy.

In addition, we must start developing and investing in new alternative sources of energy, such as hydrogen, immediately. By increasing domestic production and developing new sources of energy, we can decrease our dependency on foreign oil, stabilize the markets, and lower the price of energy for all North Carolinians.
